How to create a rock star curly hairstyle

Elie Elie curl expert Barbara Lhotan designed this curlicious rock princess faux hawk half up/half down hairstyle which can be dressed up or down depending on the hair occasion.

The curly hair expert graciously shared her steps on how to recreate this style which is designed specifically for medium thick naturally curly hair which is shoulder length or a little longer.

Follow Barbara's steps to recreate her curliscious hairstyle below:

1. Apply liberal amount of medium to strong hold formula gel to freshly washed, conditioned, towel blotted and carely detangled strands.

Note: If desired apply a defrisant cream or paste before the gel is added to prevent frizz.

2. Use a long finger diffuser attached to a blow dryer set on medium speed, medium heat. Dry hair in 2-3" sections working around the entire head until hair is 100% dry. Allow curls to nestle into diffuser cup while diffusing. Finish each section when possible with a cool/cold blast of air to tighten curls.

3. On 100% dry hair use a wide tooth comb or pick to create a part across each side of the head from ear to ear which will separate hair into two primary sections.

4. Clip front hair out of the way while working with the back section of the hair. Starting below the crown create a very loose fishtail braid. Attach a Blax elastic band in the same color as the hair to the bottom of the finished braid which should contain all of the hair and end at or below the nape of the neck.

5. Use fingers and gently pinch hair from either side of the head behind the ears and carefully loosen braid. Lift the end of the loosened braid and rotate counter clock wise and pin with bobby pins the same color as hair to the top of the head between crown and front of forehead.

6. After tail is securely pinned down use fingers to slowly and carefully separate individual ringlets from each side at the temples down to the to hairline. Pull individual curls up and loosely pin to the fishtail braid to create a soft cascade effect. Continue to lift individual sections of curls and pin to the scalp.

7. When all of the curls are pinned from the front to the tail of the braid use fingers to gently pull out more curls to disconnect them and create the airy layer of loose ringlet curls along the top of the cascade.

8. Use a pomade or other desired curl cream or spray applied to your fingertips to soften some of the curls along the front of the hairline near the forehead. Use fingers to shape a soft loop which cascades from the hairline onto the forehead to create a very loosely designed “faux hawk” profile from the sides.

Note: This is a free from or avant garde style of updo so there are no rules to how the finished hairstyle should look. You can play with various shapes and pin more or less curls up onto the braid depending on your mood and the time you have to experiment.

9. When the desired updo shape is finished spray with a firm holding spray. Add one tiny jeweled hair clip, barrette or crystal encrusted comb to dress up the finished hairstyle.
